Structural Immunity, in the form of prespecification of phonological
or morphological material, has been proposed by Kiparsky (1993) and
Inkelas & Orgun (1995), among others, for handling nonderived
environment blocking. This paper develops an implementation of
Structural Immunity within Optimality Theory and compares it
favorably with other existing Optimality Theory approaches to
nonderived environment blocking. The paper was presented at the
Lexicon in Focus Workshop in Düsseldorf in 1998 and will appear
in the proceedings of that workshop.
