| Abstract: | This dissertation is a comparative study of Local Assimilation of Consonants in English and Kurdish in the light of Optimality Theory. The study attempts to show the way in which the two languages organize the two main constraints of Markedness and Faithfulness related to assimilation within Optimality Theory. The study will test the hypothesis that Markedness constraints dominate the Faithfullness constraints in cases of consonant assimilation in both languages. To carry out the study, a model has been adopted to explain the cases of local assimilation of consonants in English and Kurdish within the framework of Optimality Theory. The hierarchy of the Agree(x) and the Indent IO constraints have been shown and explained within the adopted models. The first constraint asks for the agreement of sound features for adjacent sounds, while the latter constraint asks for a total resemblance between the output form with its input form. It has been found that both languages have the same order of the hierarchy of the Markedness and Faithfulness constraints in the cases where there is assimilation between sound segments. The study reached the point that Markedness dominates Faithfulness in all the cases of consonant assimilation in both languages. |
